Following a visit to Libya, UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Ursula Mueller told reporters that the UN was ready to “scale up” its presence across the country but needed more access, especially in the south.
Speaking at a press conference in New York today (19 Dec), Mueller reported “deplorable living conditions” at the Al Falah camp for internally displaced people, which she visited along with two senior UN development officials. She added, “These people need critical humanitarian assistance, including protection, psycho-social support, and improved shelter water and sanitation ahead of more durable solutions.”
The senior UN delegation which visited Libya last week included United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States, Mourad Wahba, the Director of the Crisis Bureau, Asako Okai, along with Mueller. They travelled together on a four-day mission to Libya and Tunisia to reiterate UN support to the national and regional efforts towards a peaceful transition in Libya and to bolster urgent assistance and stabilization actions.
